Bagdikian (1997) explains media is a source of education, entertainment and information. It also acts as a watchdog to protect public interest against malpractice and create public awareness. These legendary plays and lines show just how excellent Shakespeares works are.William Shakespeare was born in 1564, died in 1616. In his lifetime he wrote thirty-seven plays in total and became a renowned playwright. Romeo and Juliet was the second tragedy written, and it was probably written at about 1599, and was the second of his tragedies. Like all the plays of Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet was written for a typical Elizabethan playhouse. These theatres came about from 1576, when the first theatre was built.Before this time, plays had been performed by a group of actors (all male) who travelled from town to town, using open places, such as inn-yards, or with permission, the hall of a noble house as a theatre. Shakespeares own theatre the Globe was quite typical of that period. It was hexagonal in shape, with th ree roofed galleries that encircled an open courtyard. The stage, which was quite plain and high, projected into the yard, where the standing audience surrounded it. At the rear of the stage were two doors at either side for the entrances and exits of the actors, and above the doors was a balcony that could by used by musicians or for scenes on an upper level. Romeo uses this descriptive language because a boy would have played Juliet, in the Elizabethan period, and the audience would have had to imagine how beautiful Juliet should look. In addition, at the very same time Tybalt, a rival Capulet, sees Romeo at the party and recognises by his voice should be a Montague.In the video Romeo sees Juliet dancing on the dance floor from the top of some stairs while Tybalt sees Romeo from the bottom of the stairs. From here onwards the mood alternates between good and bad right the way through to the end. Next Romeo sees Juliet for the first time, this makes the audience think that they will fall in love without any further problems, but Tybalt recognises Romeo. This makes the audience think it has taken a turn for the worst and that Romeo will have to fight Tybalt, but Capulet wont let Tybalt start it because he doesnt want to ruin the party. This gives a huge sense of relief that everything will be okay.Then the scene climaxes, where Romeo and Juliet meet, fall in love, and kiss, but the happiness is crushed when Romeo and Juliet both find out that they are from rival families. The audience already knows it though, but it doesnt really make an impact until Romeo and Juliet find out, a nd know that there may be trouble ahead. Shakespeare manipulates the mood of the scene by using this structure.Dramatic techniques are used to increase and decrease dramatic intensity and tension, to keep the audience interested, and to help to manipulate the mood of the scene. At the beginning the grandiosity of the party is created through a number of factors. At the very beginning, the servants are rushing around trying to get everything ready. This shows that the party will be huge, seen as they are struggling to get it ready in time. When all the guests enter Capulet speaks to everyone:Welcome gentlemen. Ladies that have their toesUnplagued with corns will walk a bout with youNotice that Capulet speaks in verse. This shows that he is very grand, and so his party must be also. The costume also shows how grand the party is. Dramatic techniques are used especially in the parts that include Romeo and Juliet. When Romeo first sees Juliet he describes her in lots of detail. He praise s her for her beauty too rich for use and that Did my heart love till now? Romeo is saying how beautiful Juliet is, and questions whether he did love before he saw her. This creates a romantic feel to the scene. In the video, when Romeo and Juliet kiss, it happens in an elevator.This gives a sense that they are in their own world, together but free from the outside. Also there is no music or other sounds, which help to give it an increased sense of dramatic intensity, and to show that it is a very special moment of the play. The use of stage directions helps to keep the scene moving, so that there arent any pauses. As the characters finish speaking, they move off into the party to join in with festivities. This also gives the feeling that even though the stage is still, that the focus is moving throughout the party, its like moving a camera across the whole party and stopping to hear what people are saying.When Tybalt leaves in a sulk the mood is lightened, because Romeo is no longe r under threat from him, and so it gets the audience to focus now more on what Romeo and Juliet are doing, and not something else around them. This is devastating news for Juliet, and it brings her back down to earth from the party atmosphere to really focus on how this is affecting her life. It also gets the audience to focus on it, as well.The characters are represented quite well in this scene. Each of the characters main traits is exploited in this scene. Romeo is portrayed as flirtatious, romantic, and quite lovesick. Juliet is shown to be very romantic, love struck, and somehow high on love. This scene brings out the horrible side of Tybalt, and how he despises the Montague family. In the video each of the characters are portrayed by th e costume that they wear to the party. Juliet has an angel costume on, which shows that she is innocent, and very nice. Romeo has a knight costume on. Black codes are a body of laws, statues, and rules enacted by southern states after the Civil War to gain control over the slaves again. One of the first laws set for these black codes was that working African Americans were subject staying in the workplace at all times with no exceptions. In Mississippi, blacks were required to be employed and carry proof of their employment at all times. Blacks that refused to work were subject to cor poral chastisement. In the event an African American was caught stealing, or any other crime, they may be hung by their thumbs. Although slaves were free, some still felt the need to have them under control. After the Civil War, while the government in the South was weak, whites felt as if the blacks would become outraged and retaliate on the vicious treatment received by slave owners. In result, the Ku Klux Klan, or KKK was established in May of 1866. Most African Americans feared the KKK because they would operate in a very secretive manner. They were clothed in whited robes covered from head to toe, and would approach you by waiting for an event to end, and before you know it, blacks would be attacked and beat by members. They would punish blacks by hanging, lynching or beating innocent African Americans. With little to no law enforcement the KKK was able to continue this behavior for many years until 1871 when a force bill was established to combat the Klan. Even after this bill was passed, this did not prevent the Klan from continuing in other areas not very long after. While African Americans were being freed from slavery, housing and basic necessities were difficult to obtain during this historical time. Due to this issue, also in the year 1865 America also established the Freedom’s Bureau. The Freedom’s Bureau was made to assist African Americans of the South to make a huge change from slavery to freedom. The Bureau did not have the support of the government financially, but still managed to help blacks on their journey. The bureau provided emergency food, clothing, and medical care to some war refugees, including white southerners. The bureau also managed to open sixteen African American schools in the same year. This opened the doors for African Americans to receive the same education as the whites and to make more of their freedom. The Freedom’s Bureau really helped to shape the black community in a time where very few people we re willing to assist. In the year 1866, a Freedom’s Bureau school opened in Austin and was the first one in Austin to open for African Americans. Although African Americans were free, they still experienced unequal rights made by congress. Being unable to vote and having rights as an American citizen was basically nonexistent to the black community. In response to this issue the Fourteenth Amendment was established in 1868. The Fourteenth Amendment was something that stated that everyone born in the United States or resigned in the United States was subject to equal rights. This amendment was in combination of civil rights and citizenship. This made everyone equal despite their race, although blacks were still discriminated against in most areas. In the year 1870, the Fifteenth Amendment was established, which gave African Americans the right to vote. In that same year the first African American senator was elected. Hiram Revels became the first senator out of Mississippi and made history. Along with Revels becoming the first African American senator, sixteen African Americans served in Congress and about six hundred served in states legislator during reconstruction. Howard University was the first African American Law College opened in 1869. After the first law school was opened, in 1881 the first African American all women school was Spelman College. Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles founded Spelman. In the same year Booker T. Washington found Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institution, and became one of the leading schools for African American learning. Shortly after opening George Washington Carver becomes a teacher in agriculture research. He was noted an international reputation for his agriculture advances. In unit II, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People or NAACP, was founded February 12, 1909. The NAACP is the nation’s oldest, largest, and most advanced civil rights organization. The organization was fighti ng for equal opportunities and conducting voter mobilization. The NAACP was formed in retaliation of lynching in some areas and riots happening after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination; not to mention the harsh manner blacks were treated. This organization was built to help African Americans in the struggle of their past, and is still assisting toward blacks and their trials. In the early 1920’s the Harlem Renaissance was also known as the â€Å"New Negro Movement†. This was a cultural movement in America during the 1920’s which black art, literature, and music experienced renewal and growth, which originated in New York’s Harlem district. Shortly after the emancipation of slavery, blacks were looking for ways to make their culture more specific, and establish a meaning behind their race. In the South their lives had little to no meaning, by cotton picking so a nice majority of African Americans began to move to the North. New ways of playing the piano, or any instrument for that matter, was a way to be able to tell the poor Harlem people from the more established people. African Americans were banned from suburbs, kept out of decent schools, and were denied form having decent jobs. While Malcolm X was a great leader, he became a threat to the white community. The black power movement encouraged African Americans to recover their cultural roots, their African heritage, and a new sense of identity. For more militant situations the Black Panthers took a more violent approach for justice. They began carrying weapons and abusing their constitution rights to bear arms. The Black Panthers was not such a large community compared to the nonviolent approach to make changes. In 1968, Martin Luther King was assassinated in Memphis. In our present time, things have really changed for African Americans. Blacks are able to vote with no spe cial treatment compared to others. It is shocking to see  that at this age also Ajji does all the work and she even doesn’t complain. The relationship of Arti and Priti is not good whereas the relationship between Ajji and Priti is good. Ajji once insist Arti to go out of house like park whereas in reply she says that seeing other people happy she wanted to kill and bury their happiness. This shows one of the natures of depressed lady. Ironically Ajji’s husband’s room offers her the opportunity to find her voice, rebel against her daughter and break the silence that threatens to destroy her home and her granddaughter. The photo frame that was broken accidently by Arti gave a chance, which helped Ajji to talk to her and to explain her that what gone is gone. Ajji is also holding the pain of her husband but on the other hand she is managing and not running from her problems and fears. Priti has a daughter and she need to take care of her. Ajji also says that she does not want to ever see the photograph again as it is no point of seeing things which gives pain and discomfort. Arti needs to be happy at which she got rather than things, which she doesn’t have. The Story of Daniel Pearl Essay The Story of Daniel Pearl as a journalist in Dubai was very tragic. Daniel Pearl was very brave of facing those people for a interview seeking and asking information into unknown territory that leads him to a very tragic death. In the movie narrated by Mariane his wife, it has been said that his body was cut into seven pcs. though that the video of Daniel Pearl being killed by the people who kidnapped him was not shown in the movie I can imagine how hard his experience being tortured and killed of the reason of probing information to a person who is on his own territory, the Muslims knows that he is part of the CIA or some spy of USA, besides of being a Jew I suppose that’s one of the unlucky part of his short journey in Dubai. With my own opinion, I think that Daniel Pearl should not pursue that interview, because in the first place he knows that the person he wanted to interview was a dangerous person and doesn’t want a person like him or a journalist like him that leads him to be kidnapped by supporters of Omar Sheikh, though I know that Daniel Pearl only wants to seek information about Omar Sheikh but he should think first about his safety of performing that interview. I believe that a journalist should not put his/her self or life into danger when he/she already knows that it is not safe to interview a specific group or person because it may lead to a misunderstanding and may cause a problem between the journalist and the interviewee. For me it is important to a journalist to make sure that the interviewee is harmful and knows what a journalist are capable of and especially their task that they just want to know and to write information to a specific matter, also for me a journalist should seek first or observe some of the information about the person or group he/she needs to communicate with regarding the issues about the interviewee. The goal of a journalist is to â€Å"tell the truth and nothing but the truth† but in the situation of Daniel Pearl he told that he is a Jew that is not pleasant to the Muslims that’s why he got kidnapped and murdered by them, but on the other side of being a journalist they should always state information that are real and complete but also they need to remember that they have to keep secret the sources of confidential information not only for the safety of the source but also their safety. In order for a journalist to be a reliable source of information a journalist should do his/her best to obtain information from all possible sources, to make sure it is complete, truthful and unbiased just like what Daniel Pearl did, he interviewed different people to gather information about the certain person before he undergo an interview to avoid future conflicts. I think Daniel Pearl should introduce himself in a different way that is appropriate to the interviewee and also he should approach the interviewee well in that way I think the murdering of him will be prevented. It doesnt matter that he was a Jew. The race that he was born doesnt dictate who you are, it’s the content of your character and who you are inside. He was a journalist because he wanted to put an end to this kind of foolishness, killing someone based on race can never be justified, Muslims should not be so cruel to the people that if they don’t like that person they will already kill the person. Its not because he was a Jew that many place some of the blame for his death on him. Its because he was a prominent Jew in the territory of the enemy looking for glory at the knowing risk of his own life. He should have been thinking of his wife and child, it is understood that he will be killed like that because of his being prominent that he is a Jew. Daniel was working for CIA and eventhough the athourities have warn him several times, he ignored. He was looking for glory. I think he is responsible for his death because he did not think of his safety of going there and not thinking of what might happen if the Muslims will kill him and that’s the most unfortunate thing that happened to him because he become careless about his identity he is very vogue about it, just like what Mariane told in the movie he doesn’t hide that he is Jew though he doesn’t also speak about it, but if someone ask him he will not hesitate to tell the truth about identity or religion. This movie does tell us something. It’s telling us about the dangers that a jounalists face in their line of duties. Not alot of people realize how dangerous it really is sometimes to go report some news stories. The Pakistanis didn’t kill Daniel Pearl for fun, they did it to pay Americans back for the suffering of their people, but did the Pakistani’s take off the suffering of their people by killing lots of people who’s trying to end their conflicts and issues? for me the answer is NO their just making it more complicated and worsen the problem, the Muslims should stop this horrifying killing of people just for their own beliefs, and to avoid this kind of situation a journalist should always know what is their limitations of probing information to avoid incidence like what happened to Daniel Pearl and to the other journalist they should always think first about their safety. Also a journalist should not take part in activities or organizations which could limit the independence of his/her thinking and endanger his/her professional integrity.
